If you're new to the world of LEGO building or just need a refresher, here are some common terms, slang, and acronyms associated with building with LEGO bricks:

  • Adult Fan of LEGO. This term is used to describe adult LEGO enthusiasts who continue to enjoy building with LEGO bricks well into their adult lives. The AFOL community is known for its passion for LEGO and the amazing creations they make.

  • A LEGO piece with studs on top and tubes on the bottom that allows bricks to be connected together. The basic building block of LEGO creations. Bricks come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, allowing builders to create anything they can imagine.

  • A non-LEGO brand that produces LEGO-like building toys. These brands are often cheaper than LEGO, but may not be as high quality. Some popular clone brands include Mega Bloks and KRE-O.

  • A LEGO line of toys for younger children, with larger pieces that are easier for small hands to manipulate. DUPLO sets are designed for children aged 1 and a half to 5 years old. They are great for introducing young children to the world of LEGO building.

  • Great Ball Contraption, a LEGO building style that focuses on building machines that move LEGO balls from one module to another. GBC modules are often built by multiple builders and can be arranged in a variety of ways to create a large and impressive display.

  • LEGO User Group, a community of LEGO enthusiasts who meet to share their creations and ideas. LUGs can be found all over the world and often organize events and contests for their members. Being part of a LUG is a great way to connect with other LEGO fans and get inspiration for your own builds.

  • A style of LEGO building that focuses on building small, detailed models on a small scale. Microscale models often include intricate details and creative building techniques.

  • The small, articulated figures that come with many LEGO sets. Minifigures are highly collectible and often have unique designs and accessories. They are an essential part of many LEGO builds and can add personality and detail to a creation.

  • A style of LEGO building that focuses on creating small, detailed habitats for LEGO minifigures. Minifigure habitats can be anything from a small house to an entire town, and are often built with intricate details and creative building techniques.

  • My Own Creation, a LEGO creation designed and built by an individual builder, rather than a LEGO set. MOCs can be anything from small figurines to large, intricate buildings. Many AFOLs specialize in building MOCs and display them at LEGO conventions and events.

  • A LEGO building that is designed to be part of a larger cityscape. Modular buildings are often built in sections that can be rearranged to create a customizable cityscape.

  • Studs Not On Top, a building technique that involves placing LEGO bricks and plates sideways to create a smooth surface. SNOT is often used in advanced building techniques and can create some amazing designs.

  • The raised round bumps on the top of LEGO bricks that are used to connect them to other pieces. Studs come in a variety of sizes and shapes, allowing builders to create complex and detailed structures.

  • A LEGO line of toys that focus on complex mechanical functions, including gears, axles, and motors. Technic sets are often used by advanced builders to create moving and functional LEGO machines. They are a great way to learn about engineering and mechanics while having fun building.
